The outer islands are one of the greatest attractions and experiences of this relatively untouched region. Exploring the culture of the Melanesian peoples will surely add a new dimension and understanding to your visit.
Please bear in mind that tourism is relatively new to these unexplored islands, in some cases the accommodation is not what you would expect in the capital city, but the Ni-Vanuatu people are always welcoming and obliging. Most bungalows and guesthouses are owned and run by local Ni-Vanuatu so tourism to the outer islands makes a much valued contribution to the rural economy. Often the bungalows are made of local materials (bamboo; bush trees; thatch etc) and are very basic in design. Do not expect luxury items, except a clean bed and a friendly host. The rural parts of Vanuatu do not have mains supply electricity, however most villages run generators for a few hours each evening. It is unlikely that you will find hot water showers, but a cool shower after a day’s exploring or relaxing is not too unpleasant. While we encourage you to explore the dynamic culture of the outer islands, please respect local traditions and customs. Ask your host about appropriate clothing (wearing revealing clothing away from the beach is not considered appropriate); access to various village places and ask permission before taking photos of locals. Please show a generous spirit in exploring the islands and enjoy a unique experience.

Nguna, Pele and Emau

This collective group of islands off the northern point of Efate are easily accessible from Port Vila, a short truck ride and boat ride will see you on any one of these unspoilt islands within 90 minutes of leaving Port Vila. This makes them the ideal location for a quick island escape, whether you have one day or many to spare on your trip to Vanuatu, a visit to one of these islands is highly recommended. All islands have beautiful sandy beaches and safe snorkeling options with Nguna and Pele sharing a newly established Marine Conservation Area. The northern part of Nguna snorkeling is magnificent if you are adventurous enough to venture out to see marine lava tubes. The interior of each island is slightly different with Nguna offering walking tours to the extinct volcano – the reward for taking this option is the magnificent views out across to the Shepherd Islands and across Efate.
This enclave of islands can easily be visited from anyone of the neighbouring islands, just ask for a boat and driver!
